An Elementary Price Index for Internet Service Providers in Canada: A Hedonic Study
نویسنده
چکیده
It is well known that late introduction of new Products into the CPI leads to an upward bias in the index. Moreover, improper treatment of quality improvement in the product will add to the upward bias. In this paper a hedonic elementary price index for accessing the Internet in Canada is constructed. We find that the quality-adjusted price index declines at about 15% per year. Detailed data are readily available on-line so that costs of implementation are moderate. We discuss the use of different functional forms in the regression, their ease of use and performance, and compare the resulting index with the matched model approach. Some problems in using the Box-Cox transformation and in handling packages with unlimited access are also discussed. JEL Classification: C43, C52, E31, L86

A hedonic model for Internet access service in the Consumer Price Index
The practice of making hedonic-based price adjustments to remove the effects of quality changes in goods and services that enter into the calculation of the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) has to date focused primarily on indexes for consumer electronics, appliances, housing, and apparel. In an effort to expand the use of hedonic adjustments to a service-oriented area of the CPI, this article i...
متن کاملPricing IaaS: A Hedonic Price Index Approach
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a rapidly expanding model of cloud computing. It includes control of computing resources, such as memory, computing power and storage capacity, satisfying the most fundamental IT needs for businesses on a usage-based payment model. Currently, there is an increased demand for IaaS services, which in turn feeds competition among cloud providers. As the price ...
متن کاملEstimation of information value on the Internet: application of hedonic price model
This paper estimates the value of Internet information by using the hedonic price model (HPM). We specify a hedonic price function, and measure the consumer’s willingness to pay for attributes to the Internet connection charge. We also identify a functional form for the HPM by using the Box–Cox transformation of the variables in our analysis. Our results indicate that the variation in the Inter...
متن کاملWeb Service Providers\' Game on Price and Service Level
Response time is one of the critical web service quality dimensions. It refers to how long it takes that a web service responds to request of a user. In order to manage the response time, pricing schemes can work as an efficient access control mechanism. In this paper, we study competition between two providers offering functionally same web services where there is a monopoly service provider...
متن کاملPrice Comparison for Infrastructure-as-a-Service
Today’s pricing of infrastructure-as-a-service is not transparent because some providers, such as Google, charge separately for each service characteristic (e.g., $50 per CPU or $15 per GB of memory per month) and let customers freely configure the service. In contrast, competitors like Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM only offer predefined bundles (e.g., 4 GB of memory, 400 GB of storage, and 2 CPUs...
